Long-Acting Injectables

LAIs

Long-acting injectables (LAIs) are a form of medication delivery that involves administering a higher dose of a medication via injection, which then releases slowly into the bloodstream over an extended period of time. This method of medication delivery eliminates the need for daily dosing and provides a more consistent and sustained release of the drug. LAIs are commonly used in the treatment of various conditions, including mental health disorders such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, as well as certain physical health conditions. By offering a longer duration of action, LAIs can help improve medication adherence, provide more stable blood levels of the drug, and potentially reduce the risk of relapse or recurrence of symptoms.

In addition to mental health disorders, LAIs are also utilized in the treatment of substance abuse, particularly in managing conditions such as opioid or alcohol use disorder. By administering medications via long-acting injectables, healthcare providers can support individuals in overcoming substance abuse challenges by ensuring consistent medication levels, reducing cravings, and promoting adherence to treatment regimens. LAIs play a crucial role in the comprehensive approach to substance abuse treatment, offering a sustained release of medications to support recovery and long-term wellness.

Here are a few long-acting injectables utilized to treat psychotic/mood disorders and substance abuse.

  • Risperidone (Risperdal Consta): Used for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
  • Paliperidone (Invega Sustenna/Trinza): Used for schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.
  • Aripiprazole (Abilify Maintena/Aristada): Used for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
  • Olanzapine (Zyprexa Relprevv): Used for schizophrenia.
  • Fluphenazine decanoate (Prolixin Decanoate): Used for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
  • Haloperidol decanoate (Haldol Decanoate): Used for schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.
  • Naltrexone: Long-acting injectable formulations such as Vivitrol used in alcohol and opioid use disorder treatment, blocking euphoric effects and reducing cravings.
